- A story of light across the Quattro Canti, told through Sicily’s fruit, flowers and symbols.
A hymn to Sicily
As the nights grow longer and winter darkness draws in, Il Teatro della Luce brings new light to Palermo. Fruit and flowers from the Sicilian landscape take centre stage, chosen for their beauty and symbolic power.
The installation becomes a visual and spiritual antidote to the harshness of winter, a song of hope celebrating the earth’s generosity even in the most difficult months: golden citrus fruits, which brighten Sicilian winters, evoke abundance and resilience, while flowers, emblems of rebirth, suggest the perpetual cycle of life and nature.

BEAUTY AND SYMBOLISM
At the Quattro Canti, symbols of a fertile, vibrant Sicily bring the Baroque architecture to life. Natural motifs projected onto the façades echo their curves and intricate decoration, connecting art, nature and spirituality. The square honours the seasons, the reigns of monarchs and Palermo’s patron saints — Agatha, Christina, Nympha and Olivia — who embody hope, faith and protection. Their symbols glow alongside fruit and flowers, expressing resilience in the face of adversity, including the drought affecting the region. At the centre of Piazza Villena, a display of photographs from the recent 400th Festino, drawn from the exhibition “Palermo Rifiorisce con Rosalia”, places the patron saint at the heart of a landmark year for her celebration. Il Teatro della Luce also plays on the Italian expression “siamo alla frutta”: literally “we’re down to the fruit”, it means we have reached the end of the road. Here, the fruit instead celebrates the rewards of work, care and effort. The installation continues the message “La Speranza siamo noi” (“We are hope”) that closed the previous Festino. Fruit and flowers become signs of a fresh start and a promise of abundance in the year ahead. In a place so closely associated with the sun and the seasons, this celebration of light connects tradition with contemporary life.
